Monster - not as “misfortune” (Latin “monstrum”), but in another sense: “anything extraordinary, supernatural, or wonderful; a thing to be wondered at; a prodigy” (Century Dictionary, 1898). Monstrosity as a category works double-time — it “expresse[s] rather than violate[s] the created order of nature at the same time that it expresses a singularity, a fundamental difference that challenges rather than supports dominant conceptions of order”. This contradiction is, if I may say so, Mici’s very heart: like the etc., she is part and parcel of rational organizational schemata; at the same time, the very miscellaneous quality of her particular monstrosity cuts to the heart of, with a defiant challenge to, order. In this sense, her primary function is interruption by way of what Emmanuel Levinas identifies as “skepticism, an affront (such as can only be introduced by way of monstrosity) to the violent logics of State and closure”. All this is another way of saying that Mici is the shadow that follows philosophy, only to challenge its authority by way of a radicalized alterity that cannot be consumed by the Same.

If you happen to go into Laszlo’s (http://www.laszlobar.com/) on the weekend during the day (*never, ever go at night*), either Jack or Kite will be working. Kite is an angel. Truly. xox. Jack - a little devil. Beware because Jack likes to see people teeter out of that bar whilst they entered with their wits about them. That perpetual twinkle in his eyes is one of mischief!

That said, he does make a mean drink and has great suggestions. For instance, if you order a Moscow Mule on a hot day, he’ll convince you to drink a “Jack’s Ass.”

A very good friend, from my teen (angst) years, made a special trip to San Francisco to see me. Loads of thoughts on the matter but not much I can post publicly. Nevertheless I think his visit warrants a *blah-og nod.* I imagine reunions after 18 years are often exciting albeit unnerving affairs. Charlie and I hopefully still retain the essence of our spirits that made us “click” in years long past. We would not have survived without each other during that time. My hope is that we have improved exponentially while retaining the FiZzLe & pOp.

The question that consumes me is: how have we changed and if so what is the effect? Will our synapses fire with the same rapidity? Have our wits sharpened or dulled? Will the once amazingly energetic, creative banter ad infinitum have lulled to a murmur? Open fleshy spiritual wounds or strength from adversity?

Well Charlie since you put it that way, today is a day of “commodius vicus of recirculation.” I expect nothing less. Your landing in 4 hours and I am counting the seconds. [I dug out some photos from our teen years. See one below.]

Seeing Charlie was wonderful. The experience transcended anything that could be verbalized here. One thing is certain: it is great to evolve with dear friends despite tragedies and the gulf of space and time.
